Spirit Skateshop may be a mecca for Spokane's skate community.
Spirit, located at 226 S. Washington St., does a whole lot more
than sell skateboarding equipment. It sponsors demonstrations
and contests. It recently was chosen "shop of the month"
by the popular skateboarding magazine Thrasher.
Spirit also produces videotapes of some of the best skaters from
the Spokane area. The most recent video, "SPIRITed,"
came out last summer, featuring the talents of Nich Kunz, Josh
Mohs and James Browning.
"Spirit is a good shop, where the people who work there
know what they are talking about," said Ross Hill, a local
skater/cinematographer.
Spirit's owner, Steve Sanchez, is a busy guy, running the shop,
filming the videos, marketing his own brands including Spirit
skateboards and RIPSit, and taking care of his family. Balancing
it all comes down to taking it "one second at a time,"
he said.
Sanchez hopes to expand his business, possibly opening another
Spokane shop and building an indoor skate park.
"I think Spirit is the only real skateboard shop in this
town," said Peter Adams, a 16-year-old Spokane skateboarder.
